This session offers a perfect introduction to sustainable material use for those looking to reduce the environmental impact of their building projects. Through a mix of theory and practice, you will gain a concise yet comprehensive understanding of what building sustainability, circularity and environmental impact mean in 2025, which contradictions exist within these concepts, and which strategies can lead to low-impact outcomes today. The training session looks at a range of concrete solutions which are readily available and discusses the challenges and obstacles that professionals are currently facing. It concludes with a series of inspiring examples that show how far the boundaries of what’s possible have already shifted in recent years. After this training, you will: - Understand how conventional building materials are deeply intertwined with today’s ecological challenges. - Know how sustainability strategies such as reuse, recycling, timber construction, and modularity relate to one another, and which approaches are most or least effective in reducing environmental impacts. - Have a general understanding of current sustainability criteria, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and their relation to the shifting regulatory framework. - Understand how the Avoid–Shift–Improve methodology enables you to drastically reduce the environmental impact of your building projects in a quick and pragmatic way. - Be able to immediately get started with a series of budget-friendly and low-impact construction materials.
